HomeProductsInc tips for winter
Hello! As you may or may not have noticed. "Winter is coming.." But seriously, we here thought it would be proper to extend a few tips and tricks out to you for getting through the cheery holiday seasons.
1. Did you know that you can actually run your ceiling fan on low in a clockwise direction during winter to make your room a little bit more comfortable. This is done by pushing air upwards and outward causing warm air to circulate back down in the room.
2. An attic fan should operate in winter as well as summer. Proper attic ventilation is still important.
3. 157 and 154 Broan ceiling heaters are cheap and work wonders for instant heat in those chilly tile bottom floor bathroom or showers.
4. Medicine cabinets make great gifts for your bathroom. Just sayin'.
5. Now is the time to practice winter home safety. Do a deep cleaning of your range hood, clean the filter, buy a new one, clean the knobs and the drip pan. A clogged filter can easily catch fire and spread toxins in the filter. There are numerous videos on YouTube to help you accomplish this.
That should do it for now. Don't forget to keep checking our blogs and twitter (link below) and like us on Facebook!

IK15WH? Its just the same!
We picked up 2 viable alternatives to our lost 2 station intercom, the IK15WH. People always ask - "HomeProductsInc, what did NuTone use to replace the IK15WH?" The answer is sadly, nothing direct. They ceased production entirely. What we currently offer is a surface mount 2 wire intercom from our friends at Comelit. This kit (#8270) comes equipped with a transformer, and a door release can also be added to enhance its security purposes. Like its distant cousin the IK15WH, this kit is audio only. The 8270U intercom comes in at a very attractive price of $81.94 its our pick for a simple and sound IK15WH replacement.
Also rounding out our list of IK15WH intercom replacements is the Aiphone. The Aiphone CCS1-A is a simple 2 station push to talk intercom with automatic shut off.
Press-to-talk door answering with automatic shut-off.
Second inside room station (separate power supply required).
Backlit CALL button.
CHIME and VOICE volume controls.
Powered by AC transformer PT-1210N.
As always you can find these intercoms and more on our website

Solar Powered Fans
What?
A solar fan is an attic fan powered by solar panels. The solar panels are either mounted on the device or are installed elsewhere. Solar fans mostly do not require secondary power sources other than solar power, as most of them are used for cooling purposes during day time. It runs the fastest when it is the hottest outside (and lets just be honest, its been more than "hottest" this summer) providing generous savings on air conditioning costs.
There are a couple choices when it comes to Solar Powered Fans
Solar Powered Attic Fans - Provide excellent circulation of air in attics of homes.
Solar Powered Gable Fans - Installed in the gables, they are almost always smaller but more powerful. They are typically used in garages or barns or other storage applications where moisture is prevalent.
Why?
A solar fan is leaps and bounds more environmentally friendly
Cheaper long term solution - provides up to 30% on air conditioning costs.
No electrical cords
More mobility

Efficient Energy Use
Efficient energy use, sometimes simply called energy efficiency, is the goal of efforts to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. For example, insulating a home allows a building to use less heating and cooling energy to achieve and maintain a comfortable living temperature. Installing fluorescent lights or natural skylights reduces the amount of energy required to attain the same level of illumination compared to using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights use two-thirds less energy and may last 6 to 10 times longer than incandescent lights. Improvements in energy efficiency are most often achieved by adopting a more efficient technology or production process.
Here are simple tips to save energy
1) Plug all appliances into a power strip and turn the strip off when the appliances are not being used.
2) Purchase Energy Star and other efficient products.
3) Turn off lights when you leave a room.
4) Switch to fluorescent bulbs.
5) Turn off your Computer at night.
6) Install a programmable thermostat.
7) Weather strip windows and doors.

A Ducting Guide (HVAC)
Hooray, ducts! |
A duct system is often called ductwork. Planning ('laying out'), sizing, optimizing, detailing, and finding the pressure losses through a duct system is called duct design.
Whilst planning ducting a bathroom it is important to know duct size and where you would like to your bathroom fan to vent. Typically, ducting runs towards the attic and out the side. If using flex duct always, always try to keep it straight as possible, as kinks and bends will significantly decrease airflow. Also, ducting will need to be cleaned to prevent mold and dirt build-ups that could affect the quality of air in your home.

Tip Of The Week.
The 690NT is a gem of a product. Not only does this upgrade kit reduce sound by 50%, it also bolsters airflow by 20%. The white grille is set to match almost any decor your bathroom might currently have. If you have an older house with an older Nautilus N671 or N688, Broan 670, 671 688, 689 or Nutone 693, 695, 696N that has become noisy and inefficient, this is a hand in glove fit for you. This requires no wiring, no ductwork, just a simple 10 minute "plug and play" if you will.
Our Tip Of The Week is this -
Measure the size of the existing housing in your ceiling before buying!

Range Hood Beginners Guide
New homes are now built much tighter in order to increase energy efficiency. The down side of this development is that it can also significantly increase levels of indoor pollution, since it results in decreased airflow. Agencies and organizations such as the EPA and the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) have identified the kitchen as the key source of indoor air pollution for which they have established the range hood to be the most effective combatant. BROAN Range Hoods are designed to quickly capture pollution at the source and exhaust it outdoors rather than throughout the home. Additionally, BROAN Range Hoods work hard to protect the home’s interior against the damaging effects of heat, humidity and airborne grease; saving time, labor and money.
So what do all them there fancy terms mean? Lets find out!
Ducted or Ductless?
Your range hood should be ducted to effectively keep the home safe and harmonious. While ductless filters do nab some of the grease and odor, a lot of the heat and smoke will still be left lingering in the home.
- Always, always use a metal duct.
What do CFM and Sone mean?
CFM is cubic feat per minute of exhaust flow. Same rule applies as with the bathroom fans - the higher the number, the greater the amount of air being exhausted. Sone is the recognized unit of loudness. One sone is about equal to the quiet hum of a refrigerator.
What does the term Convertible mean?
You can duct these range hoods vertically or horizontally.

NuTone® Rx Safeguards - Parents, you wanna see this.
NuTone locking cabinets are a powerful tool for Medicine Abuse Prevention. Decorative options to locate openly or designs for more discrete yet convenient locations, these cabinets are easily installed and sturdily constructed. Safer than customary medicine storage devices, they can help a family safeguard and control access to drugs in the home.
A common element of drug abuse stems straight from teens and access to the family medicine cabinet. Teens are abusing prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs to get high. This includes painkillers, depressants, stimulants and cough and cold remedies. 10% of teens say they took drugs from friends or relatives without asking, and 70% of people that abuse painkillers say they get them from friends and family. The number one recommendation to help prevent teen prescription drug abuse is to safeguard all drugs in the home. Control access and safeguard these drugs by installing a locking cabinet from NuTone. These NuTone products are made in the USA. Our manufacturing facility in Cleburne, Texas designs, engineers, builds, packages, and ships directly to your job sites.
